What Super Duper Alice Cooper Is About
Vincent Furnier was a preacher's son. At the start of the seventies he came out of the Detroit scene, took the name Alice Cooper, and added an idea of showmanship to hard rock: the makeup, the stage blood, the guillotine, and routines that horrified middle America. He was quickly regarded as both a major name and a major threat. Then the man carrying the mask and the mask itself got mixed up with each other. Sam Dunn, Scot McFadyen and Reginald Harkema directed it together. There are no talking heads; the telling is built entirely from archive footage, photographs, animation and voices. The directors call it a doc opera. The documentary does not hide his addiction or his recovery, and it does not turn any of it into a cautionary tale either. It won best documentary and best editing at Canada's national screen awards.
