What Surviving Progress Is About
The documentary asks one question: is what we call progress actually taking us forward? It sets out from Ronald Wright's book and works through what he calls the progress trap: technologies and beliefs that save a civilisation's present while mortgaging its future. It gives examples from civilisations that collapsed, then comes to the present: consumption of resources, debt, deforestation, and a financial system that bankrupts countries. Mathieu Roy and Harold Crooks directed it together, with Martin Scorsese among the executive producers. Stephen Hawking, Jane Goodall, David Suzuki and Margaret Atwood all speak. It takes a side, and the case it argues is plain: the present course cannot be sustained.
