The Pearl Button won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay at the 65th Berlin Film Festival and also won Best Documentary at the 21st Lumière Awards. The film records the last surviving members of southern Chile's Indigenous peoples, including the Alacalufe and Yaghan, weaving their genocide together with the political prisoners thrown into the ocean during the Pinochet dictatorship under a shared theme of water; it stands as a thematic continuation of director Patricio Guzmán's Nostalgia for the Light. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Berlinale award winning documentary that links Chile's colonial era genocide and Pinochet era political killings through the image of water. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a straightforward, plainly narrated history documentary, since the film builds a poetic, indirect narrative instead.
