The documentary is about Salvador Allende, the socialist president who came to office in Chile through an election in 1970. Patricio Guzmán returns to his country thirty years after the military coup of 1973; he talks to people who knew Allende, uses archive footage together with his own old material, and tries to understand the man both as a politician and as a person. One question is kept open from beginning to end: was Allende a revolutionary, or a reformer who chose to stay within the constitution? As the account moves towards 11 September 1973, the day the presidential palace was bombed, the director’s own voice comes in as well. Patricio Guzmán’s hundred minute documentary is counted as a continuation of the same director’s Battle of Chile trilogy; it was completed in 2004.
