What Chile: Obstinate Memory Is About
The director returns to his country after the military dictatorship and tries to show in Chile the documentary he made years before. That film had recorded the coup and the days leading up to it; most of the people watching it now either know nothing of those days or have chosen not to remember them. The documentary records the screenings themselves, the faces of those sitting in the hall and the arguments that follow. The question of the account is not what happened in the past but why a country finds it so hard to speak about its own past. Relatives of the president killed in the coup take part in the film as well. Showing a film again here does not mean presenting evidence but attempting to remember. Patricio Guzman’s fifty nine minute documentary was completed in 1997.
