The Lost Children

On 1 May 2023 a small plane crashes in the Colombian Amazon; every adult on board dies and four Indigenous children are left, the eldest thirteen and the youngest eleven months. They survive more than forty days in the jungle. The documentary tells the search from two sides, the Colombian army and Indigenous volunteers, who are in continual conflict about method. The army trusts technology and grid searching, the Indigenous searchers trust the forest's own knowledge. The children are found because of the second group's persistence, at the point when the search was about to be abandoned. Orlando von Einsiedel directed and Netflix released it in November 2024. Who it is for: viewers who like survival documentaries and stories that centre Indigenous knowledge. Who it is not for: anyone troubled by detailed accounts of children in danger.
