What Evelyn Is About
Orlando von Einsiedel’s brother Evelyn took his own life at twenty, after a few years living with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. For thirteen years afterwards the family barely said his name. The documentary follows a walk built to break that silence: siblings and relatives cross the length of Britain on paths Evelyn used to walk, and as they walk they begin to talk. The film does not try to explain either the illness or the death; what it shows is how much room an unspoken thing takes up inside a family. It premiered at the London Film Festival in October 2018, won best documentary at the British Independent Film Awards, and was released by Netflix.
