What Milk Is About

Yusuf has finished school and failed the university entrance exam. He writes poetry, and some of it appears in small journals nobody reads. He and his mother Zehra live off selling milk, and the price of milk falls a little more every day. When Yusuf works out that his mother is involved with the town's stationmaster, he does not know what to do with it. Conscription, work, poetry and his mother's life all arrive at once. The second film of Semih Kaplanoğlu's Yusuf trilogy. The trilogy runs backwards in time: Yusuf is an adult in Egg, a young man in Milk and a child in Honey. Milk premiered at Venice in 2008. Kaplanoğlu chooses looking over telling: long takes, few lines, a great deal of rural silence.
