Suzaki Paradise: Red Light District

Yuzo Kawashima's 1956 Japanese film opens with an unemployed couple stopping on a bridge at the edge of Tokyo's Suzaki district. Tsutae finds work at a bar and Yoshiji goes into a nearby noodle shop; both live looking at the district they have not entered. The bridge at the centre is not a metaphor but a physical border. On one side is the red-light district and on the other ordinary life; the couple stands exactly between and cannot decide which way to cross. The narrative shows that indecision as economic necessity rather than moral choice. The film was made shortly before the regulation that outlawed prostitution in Japan; the district itself disappeared a few years after. Michiyo Aratama leads, and Kawashima keeps the tone neither pitying nor mocking. Who it's for: those who like classic Japanese cinema and postwar social drama.
