What The Temple of Wild Geese Is About
At a temple in Kyoto, when the painter who was her master dies, a woman named Satoko is handed over to Kikuchi, the head priest; she has no say at all over her own life. Jinen, the young acolyte raised at the temple, sees the priest’s hypocrisy and the woman’s dependence at close range. The interest Satoko shows in him both draws and frightens the boy, and he stores up anger at once against the priest, against the dark story of his own birth and against his own weakness. Yuzo Kawashima’s ninety eight minute Japanese film was adapted from a novel and builds its account as a flashback; Ayako Wakao appears.
