What Tangier Is About
In August 1996 two Belgian bus drivers, Marcel Van Loock and Wim Moreels, are stopped by Moroccan customs and nearly three hundred kilos of hashish are found in a false compartment on their bus. The owner of the bus company is arrested too and confesses plainly that neither driver knew anything, yet the court gives them five years each. Tangier prison has no food, no clothing and no medical care, the guards and the lawyers run on money, and the consulate is not interested. Frank van Mechelen's real question is asked outside the walls: how much does a state actually claim a citizen jailed abroad?
