What Teenage Dirtbag Is About
A popular high school girl and a boy who is always in trouble know each other only through harassment and avoidance until they land in the same creative writing class. Writing gives them a shared language and a real bond forms. The film does not offer that bond as a rescue: the social pressure on her and the violence in his house are both still there, and both are stronger than what the two of them have made. Regina Crosby keeps the story somewhere harder than teen romance, in a place where harassment stays harassment and violence gets carried from one house into another. The ending is heavy, and it is left unspoiled here.
