What Telstar: The Joe Meek Story Is About
London at the start of the sixties. Joe Meek made records in a flat, on equipment he had built himself: no studio, no engineer but him. In 1962 he produced Telstar, an instrumental played by the Tornados, which spent five weeks at number one in Britain and became the first record by a British group to top the American chart. Then debt, paranoia and depression closed in, and part of that was the fear a gay man lived with in years when homosexuality was still a crime in Britain. On 3 February 1967 he killed his landlady, Violet Shenton, and then himself. Con O'Neill plays Meek in Nick Moran's 2008 film, with Kevin Spacey in the cast.
