What Ten Cents a Dance Is About

Barbara O’Neill is a taxi dancer at a dance hall: a customer buys a ticket and she dances. She has a jealous husband, but one of the wealthy customers, Bradley Carlton, is interested enough to tip her a hundred dollars simply to talk, and she finds herself drifting towards him. Directed by Lionel Barrymore for Columbia, the film takes its title from the popular song, which is heard over the credits. It opened in March 1931 and carries the freedom of the years before the production code. It was the seventh and last film Barrymore directed. Barbara Stanwyck has the lead opposite Ricardo Cortez, and a Spanish language version was shot from the same script.
