What Teresa the Thief Is About
Teresa Numa grows up in Lazio as the daughter of a harsh peasant, is widowed by the war and starts stealing in order to eat. Her first theft, breaking into a flat, gets her caught at once; but as the poverty goes on she turns to picking pockets, is thrown from one scheme to the next, does time in prison and is shut up in a psychiatric institution. The account is built not as a crime story but as the story of a woman who wants the same thing her whole life long, which is to have enough to eat. Carlo Di Palma’s hundred and twenty five minute Italian film was adapted from Dacia Maraini’s novel; Monica Vitti takes the lead, with Michele Placido and Stefano Satta Flores also appearing. It was completed in 1973.
