What That Uncertain Feeling Is About
Ernst Lubitsch's 1941 comedy is a remake of one of his own silent films. Jill, who believes her marriage is happy, sees a psychoanalyst about a fit of hiccups and comes away thinking there may be something wrong between her and her husband. Alexander, the sour, self-satisfied pianist she meets in the waiting room, enlarges that doubt. The film turns the new fashion for psychoanalysis into a comic mechanism: a woman with no problem creates one because she has been told she has one. Under Lubitsch the dialogue is fast and the real matter always sits in what is not said. Burgess Meredith's pianist is the main source of the comedy. It is not counted among the director's best known films but carries his manner cleanly. Who it's for: viewers who love classic Hollywood comedy and Lubitsch's style. Who it's not for: anyone uncomfortable with a plot in which the woman is steered by the men around her.
