What The Adventures of Sebastian Cole Is About
In Tod Williams’s 1998 film, Hank marries the divorced Joan and moves in with her teenage children, Sebastian and Jessica. Years later Hank announces the intention to transition, and the family scatters: Jessica goes her own way, Sebastian stays with his mother. When Joan loses herself to drink the boy comes back and moves in with Hank, now living as Henrietta, and the person everyone else walked away from turns out to be the one who actually supports him. The film handles this in 1998 with a warmth that is surprising given the vocabulary available to it at the time. Adrian Grenier plays Sebastian and Clark Gregg plays Hank.
