What The Adventures of the Yellow Suitcase Is About
Ilya Frez’s 1970 Soviet children’s film, adapted from a story by Sofia Prokofieva, turns on a doctor whose yellow case is full of impossible medicines. There is something in it for Toma, a girl who has stopped laughing, and something for Petya, a boy afraid of everything. Then the case falls into the wrong hands and the city spends the rest of the picture chasing it, which is where the songs and the chase sequences a Soviet family film of the period was expected to supply come from. The best idea is saved for the end: the courage pills never do any of the work, because Petya turns out to have found his courage without them. It won a silver medal in Venice and a children’s jury diploma in Tehran.
