What The Adventures of Werner Holt Is About
Joachim Kunert’s 1965 DEFA film adapts the first volume of Dieter Noll’s two-part novel. Werner Holt and his friend Gilbert Wolzow, both seventeen, are taken out of school and put into Hitler’s army. Gilbert becomes a fanatical soldier; Werner, at the front, starts to see the senselessness of the whole thing. The film opens in the spring of 1945 at a position they are supposed to hold against the advancing Red Army, and works backwards through flashbacks, following a boy’s passage from eager would-be Nazi to someone with nothing left to believe. It counts among the best-known anti-war films made in East Germany and was well received on both sides of the border.
