What The Albanian Is About
Arben, a young Albanian villager, wants to marry Etleva from a neighbouring clan, but her father has promised her to a man offering a higher bride price. When it comes out that Etleva is carrying Arben’s child the matter turns urgent: he has to find the money before the baby is born, and before her brothers act in the name of the family’s honour. He goes to Berlin with no papers, no experience and no language, and there he learns the ways of staying alive. The film does not dress the bride price up as tradition; it shows it as a debt, and the man as someone who has gone under that debt. Nik Xhelilaj plays the lead in Johannes Naber’s hundred and five minute film, completed in 2010.
