What The Angel Was Born Is About
Santamaria and Urtiga are two bandits on the run. Santamaria is a mystic who believes a purifying angel is coming; Urtiga, who never leaves his side, follows him and takes part in whatever he does. The pair break into a house and take its owner and his girlfriend hostage. Júlio Bressane’s film is one of the founding works of Cinema Marginal, the movement that broke away from Cinema Novo. It fragments its narrative deliberately and offers the viewer nothing to settle on, and that formal choice has everything to do with working under censorship. Shot on 16mm in 1969, it only reached commercial release in 1973, blown up to 35mm.
