What The Arrested Development Documentary Project Is About
Jeff Smith's 2013 documentary tells the story of a television series that went unwatched, was cancelled, and then acquired a devoted cult audience. Its creator Mitchell Hurwitz and cast members including Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, David Cross and Portia de Rossi describe how it was written and why its humour was built so densely. What sets the documentary apart is that it does not only talk to the people who made it: around two hundred fans from across the country were interviewed, and the account of how a show goes on living after its death is built out of that testimony. It is a concrete example of digital distribution and online sharing giving a production a second life. It was funded largely by fan support. Who it's for: people who know the show and viewers curious about television production. Who it's not for: anyone who has not seen the series; most of the documentary's jokes lean on it.
