The Assessment

A science-fiction film set in the near future, about permission to have a child. The order established after climate collapse manages resources tightly and birth requires state approval. Mia and Aaryan apply. An assessor is assigned to them: Virginia will stay in their house for seven days and decide whether the two can be parents. The method is strange. Virginia does not take notes like an inspector; she behaves directly as a child. She cries, sulks, refuses food, wakes at night, and measures how the couple respond. The house quickly becomes unbearable. The idea comes from there: is it really possible to measure whether a person is fit to be a parent, and whom does that measurement serve. The narrative builds its science fiction through premise rather than effects; the setting is almost entirely a single house. Elizabeth Olsen plays Mia, Himesh Patel plays Aaryan and Alicia Vikander plays Virginia. It is Fleur Fortuné's first feature; it screened at the Toronto film festival in 2024 and opened in 2025. An interesting production for anyone who likes science fiction built on an idea and thrillers in confined spaces. For a viewer expecting action or a wide world, the film is compressed entirely into three people and one house.
