What The Beast of the City Is About
Police chief Jim Fitzpatrick cannot get Sam Belmonte, the head of the city's crime operation, behind bars; the man gets out every time with his lawyers and his witnesses. Fitzpatrick assigns his brother Ed, a detective, to keep watch on Daisy, who is close to Belmonte. What he does not allow for is that Ed cannot handle the job. This is one of the darkest crime pictures of the pre-Code period. The film asks what the police should do in a city where justice does not function, and the answer it gives is extreme even for its own time; it still sits in an uncomfortable place today. Walter Huston plays the chief and Jean Harlow plays Daisy, appearing here just before she became a star. The ending of Charles Brabin's production is counted among the hardest closings in film history.
