What The Beast to Die Is About

A man back from photographing a war plans a run of robberies and killings in Tokyo, and the gun taken from a policeman he kills turns up in the next crime. The accomplice he takes on is Tetsuo, who goes off at a touch. Detective Kashiwagi, running the investigation, learns that whoever is doing this walks like a dead man. Tōru Murakawa made the film from Haruhiko Ōyabu’s novel. Yūsaku Matsuda used it to get out from under his pop-idol image and lost a great deal of weight for the part, producing not an action hero but a hollowed-out figure. Violence here is a symptom of collapse rather than excitement.
