What The Best of Benny Hill Is About
John Robins's 1974 film is assembled from sketches out of Benny Hill's television programme, drawn from the Thames Television years between 1969 and 1973. The silent-comedy timing, the sped-up chases, the wordplay and Hill playing several characters at once were all familiar from the show and are all present here. Benny Hill was one of the most watched comedians in Britain in his time and the programme was sold to dozens of countries. The same programme also drew heavy criticism over the years, above all for using women as figures who are perpetually chased and undressed. Both of those sit in the record of the same work.
