What The Best of the Martial Arts Films Is About
This ninety minute compilation brings together important sequences from martial arts cinema. It is a selection running from Hong Kong to America: fight choreography, the use of weapons, stunt work and preparation on set. Interviews with performers and directors are cut in; John Saxon, Jackie Chan and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are among those who speak. Sandra Weintraub put the programme together, and it is the kind of thing made for the video market at the end of the eighties: promotion rather than criticism, a shop window rather than an archive. Even so, the material it gathers shows how the genre was seen in the West. Robert Clouse, who directed Bruce Lee, is among those interviewed. Its value today is that it recorded which scenes counted as classics at the time.
