What The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man Is About
Tommy Avallone's 2018 documentary chases a pile of legends that have circulated online for years: Bill Murray turning up at a stranger's party, joining a kickball game, washing glasses behind a bar. Most of these stories were assumed to be invented. Avallone finds the people who say they were there, listens to their accounts and, where possible, turns up footage of the moments. The film aims at two questions: are the stories true, and what does it mean for a person to insert himself this randomly into other people's days? It tries to read Murray's behaviour as a philosophy of living and at times pushes that reading too far. The testimony and footage it gathers are nonetheless considerable. Who it's for: Bill Murray admirers and anyone interested in modern popular myth. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a full portrait of the actor's career or private life.
