What The Birch Wood Is About

Prewar Poland. Stanisław, who has tuberculosis, comes back from abroad to stay on his brother Bolesław's farm. Bolesław is a widower with a small daughter, and an old distance sits between the two of them. Knowing his death is close, Stanisław takes hold of life with both hands, plays songs of the thirties on the piano and starts an affair with a woman on the farm. Andrzej Wajda adapted it from Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz's short novel and built the colour palette out of the symbolist paintings of Jacek Malczewski. At the Moscow film festival Wajda took the prize for direction and Daniel Olbrychski the prize for best actor.
