What The Black Sheep Is About
Father Brown starts solving crimes instead of tending to his parish, and everybody around him objects. His housekeeper complains, the police do not want a priest underfoot, and the bishop is least amused of all: a man of the church playing detective is not what he had in mind. The priest has no intention of stopping. Helmut Ashley's 1960 film is one of the German adaptations of G. K. Chesterton's Father Brown stories. Heinz Rühmann plays him softer and more mischievous than the English original, catching his man by reading people rather than by pure deduction. It did well enough in Germany that a sequel followed.
