Thomas Bo Larsen What The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Bear Is About
In the north, among the ice, a bear loses her cub. In the same days a baby is born to a hunter and his wife, and the bear carries the baby off. The child grows up among bears and takes himself for one. Years later his human parents pick up his trail. The child now has to decide for himself who he is. Jannik Hastrup's Danish animation is hand-drawn and plain. The telling is made for young viewers but it does not make the subject light: both sides are in the right, and nobody lost anyone out of ill will. The landscape and the colours come from the glacial world of Greenland. It runs seventy-five minutes and its ending offers no easy reconciliation.
