Samson & Sally

Samson, a young whale, has no friends and spends his days listening to the stories his mother tells about the legendary whale Moby Dick. The stories take hold of him so completely that he decides to set out and find Moby Dick. On the way he meets a whale called Sally and the two of them cross the ocean together, but what they actually come up against is not a legend: it is whaling ships and polluted water. Jannik Hastrup’s sixty three minute Danish animation begins as a children’s film and takes whaling as its direct subject. Jesper Klein, Helle Hertz and Bodil Udsen provide the voices; it was completed in 1984 and is known for refusing to soften its ending.
