What The Boys from St. Petri Is About
Søren Kragh-Jacobsen adapts Bjarne Reuter’s novel about a group of secondary school pupils who form a resistance cell in occupied Denmark. What starts out looking like reckless schoolboy provocation hardens over time into real sabotage with lethal consequences, and the film is careful about the moment the game stops being a game. The inspiration is the Churchill Club of Aalborg, counted among the first organised resistance groups in the country, though the plot itself is invented. Knud Pedersen, one of the real members, was involved in the project for a while and then ended the collaboration, after which the film moved its group to a different place and a later period. It screened out of competition at Cannes in 1992.
