What The Island on Bird Street Is About
Alex is eleven, and after the rest of his family is taken he is left alone in a ruined house in the Warsaw ghetto, holding on to his father's promise to come back for him. The book he has with him is Robinson Crusoe, and he organises his solitude by its logic: find food, leave no trace, wait. Søren Kragh-Jacobsen adapted Uri Orlev's novel, which Orlev wrote out of his own childhood. It won a Silver Bear in Berlin. The hunger and the isolation stay at a child's eye level without being softened.
