What Mifune Is About
Kresten is newly married and about to move up in his father-in-law's company. News of his father's death takes him back to the rural farm he has stayed away from for years. There is also a brother there: Rud, intellectually disabled and living in his own world. Kresten advertises for someone to keep the house, and the person who comes is Liva, running from a past of her own. Søren Kragh-Jacobsen's film is the third made under the Dogme 95 rules. He founded the movement in 1995 with Lars von Trier, Thomas Vinterberg and Kristian Levring. The rules mean natural light, handheld camera and no added score, but the film's temperature is far warmer than the movement's other entries. It was a large success in Denmark and became one of the best-selling Danish films internationally. At the 49th Berlin International Film Festival it won the Silver Bear Special Jury Prize, and Iben Hjejle received an honourable mention. Who it's for: Viewers who like Dogme 95, rural family drama, and stories that turn out unexpectedly tender. Who it's not for: The handheld, raw image runs throughout, and the portrayal of the disabled character is open to argument from here.
