The Bread, My Sweet

Dominic works night and day. At night he makes biscotti in his family’s bakery in an Italian neighbourhood in Pittsburgh. By day he works downtown at a firm that arranges mergers, where his speciality is firing people. He is knocked sideways when he learns that Bella, an elderly neighbour and his family’s closest friend, has only a few months left. All her life Bella has saved money in coffee cans for the wedding of her daughter Lucca. But Lucca has been abroad for years and has no interest in marrying. Dominic decides to bring her home and talk her into marrying him. What he means to do is give Bella the thing she wants most. The film carries that strange bargain along without falling into sentiment. Melissa Martin’s hundred and five minute American film was completed in 2001.
