What The Buried Forest Is About
Machi is a high school student in a small town ringed by mountains, with no clear sense of where her life is going. She and her friends invent a story and keep it going as a relay, each picking up where the last one stopped, building a kind of future history out of the landscape around them. Then a heavy rainstorm brings down a landslide and uncovers a forest buried by a volcanic eruption centuries earlier, so that what the girls are making up and what the ground has been keeping start to occupy the same plane. Kōhei Oguri, whose debut Muddy River earned an Academy Award nomination and whose The Sting of Death took the Grand Prix at Cannes in 1990, premiered this one in the Directors’ Fortnight in 2005.
