What The Sting of Death Is About
Miho and Toshio are inside a middle aged marriage that is rotting. What is between them is not a single quarrel; both are trying to get the upper hand, and in that struggle they put their children and their household at stake. Her suspicion and his guilt feed each other; neither of them can let go. The film tells it not by staging scenes of shouting but by drawing out the silences and the repetitions. The account puts nobody in the right and offers no solution. The children watching all of it are present in the account too, and the film never lets you forget them. Keiko Matsuzaka plays the lead in Kohei Oguri’s hundred and fifteen minute Japanese film, completed in 1990.
