What The Cabin in the Cotton Is About
Marvin, the son of a sharecropping family and the one who got an education, lands in the middle of the reckoning between the landowner and the tenants, while also being drawn to Madge, the owner’s daughter. Michael Curtiz’s film states the exploitation openly: the landowner keeps the books, the debt never ends, and the crop is never really paid for. Made before the Hays Code was enforced in earnest, it leaves both the sex and the class question unsoftened. Bette Davis appeared in nine films that year and was not yet known, but the part of Madge drew critics to her; Curtiz had objected to her casting and Darryl Zanuck insisted. Richard Barthelmess plays Marvin. The Warner Bros production opened on 15 October 1932. Among the record’s keywords is a lynch mob, and the film does not avoid that scene.
