What The Camp on Blood Island Is About
The last days of the Second World War, in a prisoner of war camp in Japanese occupied Malaya. The camp commander has sworn to kill every prisoner if Japan surrenders, so when the British colonel inside learns the war is over he tries to keep the news from reaching the camp, and a game against the clock begins. Val Guest made the film for Hammer; it did very well in Britain and drew a hard reaction from critics, who accused it of exploiting real suffering and turning it into sensation. Fiction though it is, it counts as one of the first films to treat those camps in this register.
