What The Case Against 8 Is About
Ben Cotner and Ryan White's 2014 documentary is about the lawsuit brought against Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California. The team was inside the case for five years: the plaintiffs, two couples, and an unlikely pair of lawyers, Ted Olson and David Boies, who came from opposite political sides. The film spends less time in the courtroom than in the preparation rooms, where testimony is rehearsed and arguments are argued over for hours. It was the first federal lawsuit for marriage equality and it went to the Supreme Court. The film won the directing award at Sundance.
