The Cats of Mirikitani

The documentary takes up Jimmy Mirikitani. Mirikitani is a painter. He works on the street and lives on the street. Where he is stands close to the World Trade Center. The attack of the eleventh of September overturns that neighbourhood. An editor working nearby wants to help him. The editor is called Linda Hattendorf. She takes him into her own home for a while. At the same time she looks for a permanent place for him. Over that period she learns the artist’s past. Mirikitani was born in California and raised in Japan. Two subjects stand out in his pictures. One is cats and the other is the internment camps. Linda Hattendorf’s American documentary of 2006 runs seventy four minutes.
