The Chambermaid

The story is set just before the First World War. Anne, fifteen and poor, is sent from a small Slovak town to Prague to work as a maid for a wealthy family. There she meets Resi, the daughter of a noble house. Resi was born and raised to be an ornament and a trophy: of the house, of her family, of Austria Hungary. The two girls were born in the same year but stand at opposite ends of the social ladder. They find a friend in each other, and in time what is between them becomes love. The film tells two girls holding on to one another in a world men decide. Dana Droppová and Radka Caldová take the leads, with Vica Kerekes also in the cast, in Mariana Čengel Solčanská’s hundred and ten minute Czech and Slovak production, completed in 2023.
