The Kidnapping

The first year of the young Slovak Republic is coming to an end. Everyone is celebrating, the underworld’s man Efendi and the president alike. The only one with nothing to celebrate is the president. He refuses to make the appointment being demanded of him, and for that he has to be brought into line. Some time later his son is beaten in broad daylight, and months after that taken out of the country. Oskar, a young intelligence officer, cannot live with it and talks to an investigator: he says he took part in the abduction on his superiors’ orders. The film rests on something that happened in 1995, when the son of the Slovak president was abducted and taken abroad, with the state security service widely held responsible. The account asks who a state turns its own instruments against. Rebeka Poláková and Maroš Kramár appear in Mariana Čengel Solčanská’s ninety five minute Slovak film, completed in 2017.
