What The Cheyenne Social Club Is About
Two aging cowhands ride north from Texas after one of them inherits a business in Cheyenne. John O'Hanlan expects a respectable establishment and finds a working brothel instead, along with a town that has strong opinions about it. Gene Kelly, better known for musicals, directs at an unhurried pace that mostly gets out of the way and lets his two leads talk. That is the point of the thing: James Stewart and Henry Fonda had been friends for decades by 1970, and the camera is happy just to sit with that ease. Their previous western together was Firecreek, two years earlier.
