Harald Lönnbro What The Children of Noisy Village Is About
Lasse Hallström's 1986 Swedish film is adapted from Astrid Lindgren's books. Bullerbyn is a settlement of three houses, and the six children who live there describe what they do across one spring and summer. There is no plot: hay is gathered, they swim in the lake, cherries are stolen, small wars break out between the girls and the boys and preparations are made for midsummer. The film does not construct childhood as danger or drama; it records an untroubled period as it is, and that choice separates it from its kind. One of the children narrates and the language is extremely plain. The images dwell on rural Sweden and the turning of the season. Lindgren wrote the screenplay herself. Who it's for: viewers who like calm family films and adaptations of children's literature. Who it's not for: anyone expecting narrative and tension; the film is uneventful on purpose.
