What The Conspirators Is About
At the end of the eighteenth century, in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil under Portuguese rule, priests, poets, officers and wealthy men plan a rising for independence. The plan is betrayed before it begins and all of them are arrested; under questioning most accuse one another, while Tiradentes, the least powerful among them, takes all the responsibility on himself. The others escape punishment and he is executed, later to be made the founding figure of the nation. Joaquim Pedro de Andrade’s seventy eight minute Brazilian film was made in 1972, in the years when the country was under military rule, and sets up colonial oppression as the counterpart of that period. José Wilker appears; the film is counted among the best Brazilian films.
