Garrincha What Garrincha: Joy of the People Is About
The documentary catches Mane Garrincha in the middle of his career, in 1962: the dribbling, footage from the 1958 and 1962 World Cups, that impossible balance on the pitch. But Joaquim Pedro de Andrade will not leave it at a portrait of a star. In the last section the camera turns from the player to the crowd and changes its subject: the contracts footballers signed, the rights they did not have, and a country loading its happiness onto one man's legs. Andrade applies the direct cinema method he had learned from the Maysles brothers in the United States. Fifty eight minutes in black and white, it is one of the first works of Cinema Novo and was selected for the Berlin festival in 1963.
