What The Cossacks Is About
The film is set in a Cossack village. Lukashka is the son of the village chieftain. His father is a hard man and a fighter. Lukashka has no appetite for it. He is educated and inclined to peace. He keeps away from the fighting habits of the village. All he wants is to get close to Maryana. The villagers take him for a coward. He is humiliated in public. Maryana turns away from him too. That humiliation changes him. In the end he stands out as a warrior. Maryana then takes an interest in him. The film is adapted from Tolstoy’s novel of the same name. It was made in the silent period. John Gilbert and Renée Adorée appear in the ninety two minute film, an American production George W. Hill finished in 1928.
