The Counterfeit Coin

A counterfeit gold sovereign links four separate stories. In the first there is an honest engraver, talked into striking the coin by a young widow. The same coin then passes to a beggar and a prostitute, each trying to do something with it. Then it goes to a rich miser. Finally it stops with a newly married couple whose husband is a painter with no money. Not everyone who holds it knows it is false, and in each story it is good for something different. Yorgos Tzavellas directs the Greek film; a hundred and eighteen minutes, with Vasilis Logothetidis, Ellie Lambeti and Mimis Fotopoulos, the best known actors of the period. It counts as one of the most remembered works of post-war Greek cinema.
